な形容詞の活用
な-adjectives conjugate using auxiliary words: negative (じゃない), past (だった/でした), past negative (じゃなかった).
Pattern
な-Adj + じゃない (neg) / でした (past) / じゃなかった (past neg)
Explanation
な-adjectives don't change form themselves. Instead, the copula after them changes: Present: 静かです (quiet), Negative: 静かじゃないです / 静かではありません (not quiet), Past: 静かでした (was quiet), Past negative: 静かじゃなかったです (wasn't quiet).
In casual speech: 静かだ (present), 静かじゃない (negative), 静かだった (past), 静かじゃなかった (past negative).
When connecting な-adjectives with other clauses, use で: '部屋は静かで、きれいです' (The room is quiet and clean).
Examples
ここは静かじゃないです。
ここはしずかじゃないです。
Koko wa shizuka ja nai desu.
This place is not quiet.
昨日は元気でした。
きのうはげんきでした。
Kinou wa genki deshita.
I was well yesterday.
あの店は有名じゃなかったです。
あのみせはゆうめいじゃなかったです。
Ano mise wa yuumei ja nakatta desu.
That shop was not famous.
部屋はきれいで、広いです。
へやはきれいで、ひろいです。
Heya wa kirei de, hiroi desu.
The room is clean and spacious.
