どうして / なぜ
どうして and なぜ both mean 'why.' どうして is casual and common; なぜ is more formal. Answers use から (because).

Explanation
どうして and なぜ both ask 'why.' どうして is commonly used in daily conversation: 'どうして日本語を勉強していますか' (Why are you studying Japanese?). なぜ is more formal and literary.
Answers typically use から: 'どうして遅れましたか' (Why were you late?) → '電車が遅れたからです' (Because the train was delayed). The answer can also use ので for a softer explanation.
Casual: なんで is an even more casual alternative to どうして: 'なんで来なかったの？' (Why didn't you come?).

なぜ is formal, so match it with polite endings (んですか), not casual の.
