Sequential Actions (〜て)
〜て
Advanced uses of the て-form for connecting sequential actions, expressing cause/reason, and describing manner of action.
Pattern
Verb て-form + Verb て-form + ... + Final Verb (determines tense)
Explanation
While the basic て-form for connecting actions is introduced at N5, at the N4 level you encounter more complex uses. The て-form can express: sequential actions (AしてBする — do A then B), cause/reason (雨が降って試合が中止になった — it rained and the game was cancelled), and manner (走って学校に行く — go to school by running).
When chaining multiple actions, the tense of the entire sentence is determined by the final verb only. All preceding verbs stay in て-form regardless of whether the overall sentence is past or present.
The causal use of て is softer than から or ので and implies a natural consequence rather than a deliberate reason. It works best when the connection between events is obvious or sequential.
